PhD tour 2013

Posted: December 3, 2013

In October 2013, twenty-five PhD-students of the division of Human Nutrition of Wageningen University visited several universities and institutes in Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne, Australia. The first week we visited the University of Sydney, CSIRO and the University of Wollongong in New South Wales. The second week we spend in Victoria and visited the University of Melbourne, Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, Dairy Australia, Deakin University-Waterfront campus and Deakin University-Burwood campus. This PhD tour has been a great opportunity for us to increase and strengthen our knowledge in nutrition research and related areas as well as to broaden our network.
We would like to thank those who made this PhD tour possible. Firstly, we thank the universities and institutes in Australia for their hospitality and help in organizing the interesting program. Secondly, we thank the sponsors for their contribution to this tour. And finally, we thank the staff members, Adrienne Cavelaars, Nicole de Roos and Kees de Graaf, who joined and contributed to the scientific content of our visits and of course all participants for making the trip very enjoyable and fun!

PhD tour 2013 update

Posted: October 04, 2013

It has been a while since the last update about the PhD tour to Australia. With only one week left, all presentations, excursions, discussions and joint diners have been scheduled and we are almost ready to take-off. We are very excited to visit Australia and to be able to exchange knowledge and habits with Australian scientists!

Our group of 25 PhD students has been extended with a number of staff members from the Division of Human Nutrition from Wageningen University. We are happy to announce that during the total duration of the tour Adrienne Cavelaars will join us, together with Nicole de Roos in Sydney, and Kees de Graaf in Melbourne. Adrienne is Manager Operations and has a research history in the field of Epidemiology. Nicole de Roos is Assistant Professor and studies Clinical nutrition. Kees de Graaf is Professor in Sensory Science and Eating Behaviour.

On the 24th of September participants of the PhD tour met each other and discussed several topics that are important in the field of nutritional research. What to think about (social) media? Do we think personalised nutrition is feasible? How about organic foods? Everybody debated about such themes and formulated a number of propositions. These propositions will be introduced during a debate in Wollongong and as we already noticed during our meeting: there will be a lot to discuss.
